The Hollywood In-Seider

When word broke last week about the breakup of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, I was a bit skeptical. Do I, Preston Seider, really have that kind of effect on the ladies? Newspaper reports are rarely accurate; just last month they were reporting that the couple had married in Hawaii.

I owe it to the readers of the Hollywood In-Seider to get the facts straight. Thus, I took a trip to Las Vegas, NV this weekend to do some research, knowing that Justin was going to be there. It would also give me a chance to give a review of Baby's, arguably the hottest nightclub in Vegas.

Date: March 16, 2002
Location: Baby's Nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, NV

Background:
Baby's is in the basement of the hip Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It competes nightly with clubs such as C2K (Venetian), Studio 54 (MGM Grand), and Light (Bellagio), as well as auxiliary clubs like Utopia and Seven. Its main competition these days is Rain, which is in the new Palms hotel. The Hard Rock is owned by Peter Morton, who also runs his namesake steakhouse. His brother owns The Palms, and they don't get along. Thus, they've been going head-to-head since Rain opened in the fall.

For more info on the Hard Rock, refer to the April 2001 issue of Playboy Magazine.

The Scene:
This was tournament weekend, so the ratio in the club was awful, at least 4-1 meatheads-to-hot-chicks. Normally, Baby's is crawling with beautiful people. I was in town for a bachelor party, and on Friday night we rented a VIP booth so that we could discriminate. Needless to say, the booth was packed with ladies and surrounded by haters (excuse me, “hataz”). The guys were either business-casual dorks (wrinkled khakis two-sizes too small, dress shirt, scuffed up Dexter shoes), tight-shirt workout enthusiasts, or guys trying too hard and looked like they got all fashion advice from "Swingers." The ladies were skimpy in the clothing department, and mainly hanging with us.

The Players:
Preston Seider -world-reknowned journalist and Vegas enthusiast
Gizmo - the Best Man and cohort
Bobbie - sexy VIP coordinator at Baby's
Chad - manager of Baby's Nightclub
Christina - unbelievably hot door girl
Ed - best bartender in Vegas

Gizmo and I were chillin' Saturday night while the rest of the bachelor party was out doing other things, mainly not being fresh on the scene like us. I put in a call to Ed to get us on the VIP list at Baby's, and we rolled down. Bobbie found us and mentioned that she had a booth available if we were interested; Gizmo was down on that tip so Bobbie started setting it up.

Then we got the fuckstick.

Bobbie is literally removing the velvet rope so we could hit the booth when Chad runs up and says “Sorry, Preston, but I gotta bump you. Justin Timberlake just showed up.” I'm all like "Well, this gives me a chance to interrogate this cat on my turf, get the real scoop."

Justin pulls up with about thirty women (no Britney in sight, and thus I did not hyperventilate) and hops in our booth. I start the interview.

Preston: Hey Dude, this was our booth until you showed up
Recording Artist Justin Timberlake: Oh man, I'm sorry
Preston: Hey, that's cool:sorry about you and Britney
Recording Artist Justin Timberlake: Oh:thanks man.
Preston: PAPERBAGREVIEW.COM!!!!
Recording Artist Justin Timberlake: Huh?

There you have it. Indisputable evidence that they have broken up. Gizmo and I split; I got the feeling that Justin thought I knew a bit too much about his relationship, if you know what I'm saying. Got the impression that he was starting to put two and two together.

Gizmo and I walked upstairs to wait for a few friends, pausing to start up a conversation with Christina, who works the door at Baby's. It was at this point that I determined that she's the Hottest Chick In Las Vegas. I will have to make a return trip for photographic evidence. Gizmo worked it quite well, telling her that she looked like "a pretty Julia Roberts." Too easy. That shit doesn't write itself.

Décor:
Standard club:dark, flashing lights:the upstairs hip/hop room is more laid back:couches, a big fishtank. Nice place.

Drinks:
Standard:five bucks for a beer, more for mixed drinks or water. Pretty reasonable as club drinks go.

Service:
Impeccable.

Celebrities:
Justin Timberlake
Gizmo

Overall: Baby's is and will remain one of the top clubs in Vegas: competitors will come and go, but the bottom line is that it's in the Hard Rock, the music is good, and the service is excellent.
